La Costa Haggens = Gelsons

Gelsons is coming to La Costa!

Gelsons
Gelson’s Market in Long Beach

Gelsons Market is replacing the now-defunct Haggens and should be a welcome addition to La Costa shopping venues.

Haggen’s, who replaced Albertsons not too long ago, turned many shoppers off with their higher prices for Albertson’s standard fare.We expected a gourmet deli, more organic vegetable presentations, and you know, more of the unusual fare.

It was a resounding flop, which was unfortunate for the former Albertson’s employees who had been taken on by Haggens.

I think Gelson’s will be a welcome addition to the Carlsbad-La Costa-Encinitas shopping experience. It fills a niche occupied perhaps by Whole Foods in Encinitas,, the Seaside Market in Cardiff, Harvest Ranch Market on the border of Rancho Santa Fe…and Gelson’s in the far north neighboring community of Dana Point in Orange County.

Gelsons is expanding more cautiously than Haggens, with new stores slated to open in not only La Costa, but Del Mar and La Jolla as well. They will additionally be opening a store in Rancho Mirage. The Del Mar Gelson’s is slated to open 01.14.2016 while the one in La Costa should open 02.11.2016. La Jolla should open in late March. It is expected that many of the former Albertsons/Haggens employees will continue employment with Gelson’s.

The west end of La Costa Avenue is undergoing a major overhaul with the redevelopment of the old Von’s Center, now to be anchored by the Equinox Fitness Center and other new retail venues. The neighboring Chabad Temple was also recently rebuilt.

These are exciting times in both La Costa and Carlsbad and I think we all welcome Gelson’s to the neighborhood!
